One cannot help but admire Sinatra's audacity. The individual arrangements challenge both Sinatra's technical and emotional capacities, offering a latitude to create, while leaving the singer relatively unprotected and revealing every blemish in a voice that is no longer silken and young. He has carefully selected contemporary materials that are right for him and his state of mind. No finger‐snapping tempos, flaring brass or familiar material to hide behind.
Maybe he desired to prove something to himself. It is clear Sinatra really wanted this one to go all the way. The LP reaches out for your ears and mind and particularly your feelings in a highly human, unpretentious manner. Ranging from the stunning to the commonplace, this document shows care in every corner -from the singer's performances to the distinctive Gordon Jenkins/Don Costa charts and the endearing, affecting orchestral playing. Still engaging, he's more serious, older, perhaps wiser. To herald his re‐emergence, Sinatra taped an album in Hollywood this past summer, appropriately titled Ol' Blue Eyes is Back (Reprise FS4 2155). Here he most often reveals his best as an artist, while telling us - particularly in recent years-what he's been thinking about. Whatever his motives, Sinatra has, inevitably, kicked off his return in the recording studio, a domain in which he has been very much at home during a career that has spanned over three decades.
Perhaps he missed the action at the center of things. Perhaps calm and quiet, the isolation, were at odds with the man's reputedly restless nature. The reasons? Perhaps “retirement” was not all it promised to be. FRANK SINATRA Is singing again after two years of silence.
